Growth and Success:The Unintended Consequences of Cultivating Innovative Talents——A Qualitative Study based on Students Enrolled in Five"Double First-class"Construction Universities'the Pilot Reform Program of Enrollment for Basic Disciplines
The pilot reform program of enrollment for basic disciplines(PRPEBD)is an important policy initi-ative for selecting and nurturing innovative talents, and 2024 is the first year that the first batch of undergraduates admitted to the PRPEBD will be transferred to the next year. However, there is often an implicit tension between the policy discourse oriented to"success"and the embodied experience of"growth".Using unintended conse-quences as a conceptual tool, based on in-depth interviews with undergraduates enrolled in the PRPEBD,it found that the prevalence of the concept of"scoreism",the misinterpretation and concealment of the strategic value of basic disciplines, and the risk narrative under the coercion of the"imagery of success"are the specific representa-tions of the unintended consequences of the program. The logic of scarcity and the individual's different under-standing of talent and interest are the causes of unintended consequences. In order to address the discrepancy be-tween policy intentions and parenting practices,policy-making departments should innovate top-level designs,uni-versities need to do a good job of tracking students'growth and development, and students need to correct their mo-tivations for pursuing education and cultivate their academic aspirations.
