Content and Pollution Assessment of Heavy Metals in Sediment of Sixian Section of Sui-Tang Grand Canal in the Past 50 Years
To study the concentration of typical heavy metals in the columnar sediment of the Six-ian section of the Sui-Tang Grand Canal, the concentration of seven heavy metals including Zn,As,Cd,Pb,Cr,Ni and Cu were tested. The pollution degree and ecological risk of the heavy metals were respectively evaluated using the geo-accumulation index method and the potential eco-logical risk index method. Results showed that the average concentration of the seven heavy metals in the sediments all exceeded their soil background values of Anhui Province, and the variation of As content in layered sediments was greater than the other six heavy metals. The overall pollution level of heavy metals in the studied section was low, however Cd had shown the highest degree of enrichment and fluctuation.Based on the risk screening value and background value of soil heavy metals, the ecological risk of the studied river section was calculated as slight risk and medium risk, respectively. The Cd plays a key role in the comprehensive potential ecological risk index, and the monitoring and control of Cd should be strengthened.
