Constructing a Corpus-Based Language Vitality Assessment Index System——A Case Study of Minority Language Materials from the Chinese Language Resource Protection Project
Internationally,the more popular approach to language vitality assessment is the use of the nine criteria for evaluating the degree of language endangerment proposed by the Special Working Group on Endangered Languages of UNESCO in"Language Vitality and Endangerment".Domestically,the linguistic community generally conducts a classification assessment based on the language functions of existing language groups,sub-item measurement testing of language vitality,and the degree of language endangerment.This paper,based on a preliminary sorting and feasibility assessment of the endangered language assessment indicators established by UNESCO and recent related achievements,combined with the practice of the special task of the Chinese Language Resources Protection Project(hereinafter referred to as"Language Conservation Project")and relevant survey materials,constructs an assessment plan for the vitality of living languages with core indicators such as the selection of pronunciation partners,phonological characteristics,the quantity and quality of vocabulary collection,grammatical structure,topic content,and the style and quality of oral culture.This paper argues that an assessment plan for language vitality based on uniformly standardized corpus resource survey materials is concise and practical,and it takes into account the complexity of each language and the imbalance of various dialects within,which can be considered a new perspective or method for language vitality assessment based on corpus resources.
