Urban Cultural Capital and Urban Adaptation of Elderly Immigrants
In the context of accelerated urbanization and aging, the group size of elderly immigrants is becom-ing larger.Inspired by Bourdieu's Cultural Capital, this paper puts forward a concept of operationalized theo-retical analysis--Urban Cultural Capital to study the urban adaptation of this group of people.Urban Cultur-al Capital is a sub-category of Bourdieu's Cultural Capital, and has some distinctive properties and character-istics.Through in-depth interviews with 22 people of this group from cities of different scales in China, the paper finds that the urban adaptation of elderly immigrants is a dynamic process of transformation, which can be divided into two levels:social and cultural adaptation and psychological adaptation.Among them, urban cultural capital plays a key role in their urban adaptation process.Specifically, their adaptation trajectory at the social and cultural level roughly presents a "J-shaped" curve:the stage of acclimatization, the stage of settling down and the stage of feeling comfortable. At the psychological level, the adaptation trajectory roughly presents a "U-shaped" curve:the stage of feeling as tourists and the stage of rural attachment and the stage of stable adaptation.
