Behavior of Empty-nest Smallholders Engaged in Green Agricultural Production in the Context of Ecological Care for the Elderly:A Case Study in Jiangxi Province
For empty-nest smallholders,a special group of rural pensioners, engaging in green agricul-tural production is not only an important way for them to be self-support,but also a fitting way to realize ecological care for themselves in the context of population aging.Based on this, the article constructed a bivariate probit model to analyze the effects of green agriculture cognition and policy support on smallhold-ers'willingness of involving in green agriculture production and behaviors through 318 micro-survey data of empty-nest smallholders in Jiangxi Province. It finds that:(1)Empty-nest smallholders'willingness to practice green agriculture production is mainly affected by factors such as political affiliation, farming experience, education and training, risk appetite, and the share of household agricultural income, while gender, education and training, and risk appetite have a significant positive effect on their behaviors;(2)Their perception of development prospect of green agriculture has a significant impact on their willingness and behavior to engage in green agriculture production, while their perception of natural risk and econom-ic gain only present a certain impact on their willingness to participate;(3)Government propaganda,fi-nancial subsidies and price support in the policy support environment all positively and significantly affect their willingness, while their behavior is mainly influenced by government propaganda.Accordingly, the paper proposes that the rural social security system be improved to safeguard the rights and interests of empty-nest smallholders, their knowledge of green agriculture be improved to create a green countryside for ecological old-age care, and that a supportive environment be created in government policy to help them turn to be self-support.
