Cultural Definition of the Lower Reaches of the Yellow River—On Historical Status of the North China Plain in Yellow River Culture
Cultural definition of the lower reaches is the major issue in the study of the Yellow River culture. The view that the vast area of the Huanghuaihai Plain belongs to the lower reaches of the Yellow River is inappropriate. However,as a large river, the Huai River has its own independent drainage basin.During the period of"capturing the Huai River into the sea",the Yellow River occupied the tributaries and main river channels of the Huai River mainly because of human factors. And culturally, the Huai River culture is a subculture of the Yangtze River culture. Therefore, the Huai River Basin cannot be regarded as the lower reaches of the Yellow River both in watershed and cultural perspective.Actually, the North China Plain is the place where the Yellow River flows into the sea. Before the Qin and Han dynasties,it is the origin of Chinese civilization, the cultural center of the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods, and the base and think tank for the prosperity of Confucian studies and the realization of the"Great Unification"of the Qin and Han dynasties. It also make outstanding cultural contributions during the important historical period of the origin and formation of Chinese civilization,as well as one of the core areas that laid the foundation for the Yellow River culture as the"root"and"soul"of the Chinese nation. In a word, the North China Plain and its culture are the basins and cultures in the lower reaches of the Yellow River.
