The New Practicality-Oriented Theory of the Marxist Historians in the 1930s and 1940s—Focusing on the Four Major Marxist Historians
In the 1930s and 1940s,Chinese Marxist historiography developed a new practicality-oriented theory. As a result of both critique and inheritance of traditional practicality-oriented historiography, this new practicality-oriented theory was guided by the Marxist principle of uniting"scientificity and revolutionary spirit",specifically reflected in the unity of seeking truth and applying knowledge. It embodied the practical rationality of Marxism. Both Marxism and traditional Chinese culture share a spirit of practical rationality, and the traditional practicality-oriented thought provided Marxist historians with a historical perspective for interpretation.Although Marxist historians believed that revolutionary spirit was based on scientificity, they often neglected scientificity for the sake of revolution. Therefore, for historiography to truly serve practical purposes,it must first respect its scientific nature.
