The May Fourth Movement in the Perception of the Japanese Intellectual Community
After the outbreak of the May Fourth Movement, mainstream public opinion in Japan characterized it as an"anti-Japanese movement",and accused Chinese young students of rejecting Japan. There was a very heated discussion on the"anti-Japanese ideology",believing that British and American forces and Chinese pro-British and American politicians incited young students to cause riots.Among them, some Japanese media personnel in China, the new Japanese intellectuals represented by Yoshino Sakuzo, and the Osaka newspaper Taisho Daily News affirmed the progressive ideas embodied in the May Fourth Movement and called on the Japanese people to take a rational view of the Chinese mass movement. In the 1920 New Year's issue of the Taisho Daily News,"the opinions of Chinese celebrities and scholars on Japan"serialized the views of new figures in China's political and academic circles on Sino-Japanese relations, which was also a very rare time for Chinese intellectuals to concentrate on expressing their understanding of Sino-Japanese relations with Japan after the outbreak of the May Fourth Movement. These opinions focused on the true meaning of the May Fourth Movement and the New Thought Movement, and reflected the attention of Japanese intellectuals to the development of China's New Thought Movement after the May Fourth Movement.
