Objective OBJECTIVE To evaluate the application of the Failure Mode and Effect Analysis(FMEA)in the management of dental instruments in the Central Sterile Supply Department(CSSD).Methods Since December 2019,the FMEA in managing the sterile processing of the dental instruments was performed in the CSSD.A total of 1638 dental instruments were randomly selected from the period before and after the implementation of FMEA,and the effect of FMEA was analyzed by comparing the risk priority number(RPN),instrument management effect, and sterile processing service satisfaction. Results After FMEA implementation, the RPN values associated with the inconsistent number of handover oral instruments, instrument damage, instrument package errors, instrument cleaning, disinfection and sterilization failures were significantly lower than those before the implementation(P<0.05).The passing rate of dental instruments cleaning and packaging, the failure rate of instrument wearing, the incidence rate of wet packs, and the rate of on-time sterile packages distribution were all significantly higher after the implementation of FMEA than those before(P<0.05).The overall sterile processing service satisfaction score after the implementation of FMEA was significantly higher than that before(P<0.05).Conclusion In the management of dental instruments in CSSD,FMEA and corresponding measures based on the analysis results can effectively reduce the risks associated with the dental instruments reprocessing and increase clinical satisfaction through improving the quality levels in cleaning, packaging and sterilization assurance of the dental instruments.
