Research progress on gap junction-mediated stem cell therapy for ischemic stroke
Ischemic stroke is still one of the main causes of death in the world today.Conventional therapeutic strategies are limited by the narrow time window, and survivors often have neurological deficits after treatment.Stem cell therapy can reduce neurological sequelae by enhancing brain plasticity, while gap junctions are essential for cell proliferation, migration and differentiation during brain development. The transfer of small molecules(e.g.,glucose)between stem cells and vascular endothelial cells through gap junctions constitute an important mechanism of stem cell therapy for ischemic stroke. In this article,we review the research progress of stem cell therapy for ischemic stroke through gap junctions. We mainly summarize the cell source, mechanism of action and research results of mesenchymal stem cells, hematopoietic stem cells, neural stem cells and embryonic stem cells in stem cell therapy for ischemic stroke,so as to explore new ideas of stem cell therapy for ischemic stroke and to provide assistance for clinical treatment.
