Objective This study aims to survey the elderly mortality and investigate the role of supplementary medical insurance on the elderly health status,thus providing a scientific basis for improving the health level of the elderly and formulating relevant policies in Hebei Province.Methods Using a stratified multi-stage cluster sampling method,died elderly from January 2020 to December 2022 were selected from 11 Municipalities directly under the provincial government in Hebei Province.The mortality,participation in supplementary medical insurance,access to medical care,and medical expenses were analyzed.Results The circulatory system diseases,tumors,and digestive system diseases were the main causes of death in the elderly,accounting for 70.6%of all disease-related deaths.The circulatory system diseases were the primary cause of death in the elderly.The elderly mortality gradually increased with age.The number of elderly people aged 70-79 of years who were admitted for treatment ranked the highest.The highest average hospitalization expenses and self payment ratio were detected among those aged 60-69 of years,and lowest values were detected in those aged≥80 years.Supplementary medical insurance significantly reduced the mortality of the elderly.Conclusion Supplementary medical insurance has a positive effect on the health status of the elderly,which can reduce their mortality and economic burden,provide an additional medical insurance,and make it easier to access medical services and treatment.Surveys on the health status,lifestyle habits,and medical security status of the elderly can also help formulate relevant policies to improve their health level.
