Effects of ketogenic diet therapy on symptoms of children with autism spectrum disorder and the ATEC and CARS scores
Objective To investigate the effects of ketogenic diet therapy on the symptoms of children with autism spectrum disorder(ASD)and the score of the Autism Treatment Evaluation Checklist(ATEC)and Childhood Autism Rating Scale(CARS).Methods A total of 78 children with ASD from July 2021 to July 2022 were retrospectively enrolled.According to different treatment plans, they were assigned into the control group and treatment group, with 39 cases in each group.Patients in the control group received ASD special education and daily training+ordinary diet, and those in the treatment group received ASD special education and daily training+ketogenic diet for 6 months. The scores of the Chinese version of Psycho-Educational Profile-3rd edition(C-PEP-3),ATEC,CARS and the Autism Behavior Scale(ABC)were compared between the two groups. Results After treatment, scores of each dimension and the total scores of C-PEP-3 in both groups significantly increased, which were significantly higher in the treatment group than those of the control group(P<0.05).After treatment, the ATEC scores in all dimensions(speech/language and communication, sociability, sensory and cognitive awareness,physical/health behavior)significantly decreased in both groups, which were significantly lower in the treatment group than those of the control group(P<0.05).After treatment, the CARS and ABC scores in both groups significantly decreased, which were significantly lower in the treatment group than those of the control group(P<0.05).After treatment, poor sleeping habits, sleep anxiety, irregular sleep duration, daytime sleepiness, night waking, prolonged sleep latency and total CSHQ score of the study group were significantly lower than those of the control group(P<0.05).Conclusion Ketogenic diet therapy can effectively control the clinical symptoms of ASD in children, improve their cognition, alleviate abnormal behaviors and disease severity, improve their sleep quality, which is worthy of clinical promotion.
