Objective To analyze the outcome of demand-oriented care in diabetes patients with acute epiglottitis. Methods A total of 76 diabetes patients with acute epiglottitis who were treated in our hospital from January 2020 to March 2023 were included as study subjects. They were divided into the control group and observation group using a randomized numerical table, with 38 cases in each group.Conventional nursing care was applied to patients in both groups, and demand-oriented care was additionally performed in patients of the observation group.Duration for the disappearance of acute epiglottitis symptoms and length of stay were recorded.Severity of sore throat, blood glucose index and psychological state before and after the intervention were compared between the two groups. Results The duration for the disappearance of acute epiglottitis symptoms like sore throat, epiglottis swelling, dysphagia and dyspnea, and length of stay were significantly shorter in the observation group than those of the control group(P<0.05).There were no significant differences in the severity score of sore throat, fasting blood glucose(FBG),2-hour postprandial blood glucose(2hPG),glycosylated hemoglobin(HbA1c),and the three subscale scores of the Depression-Anxiety-Stress Scale(DASS)between the two groups(P>0.05).Patients in the observation group had significantly lower sore throat severity scores than the control group after 2 days and 5 days of intervention(P<0.05),and they had significantly lower FBG,2hPG,HbA1c and the three subscale scores of the DASS after interventions for 5 days(P<0.05).Conclusion Demand-oriented care is effective in diabetes patients with acute epiglottitis, which accelerates the recovery process of acute epiglottitis, strengthens the effect of glycemic control, improves their negative emotions and poor sleep quality, and shortens the length of stay.
