The Empowerment of Common Prosperity by the Digital Economy——Empirical Testing from Chinese Cities
In the process of advancing Chinese-style modernization, the development of a digital economy plays a significant role in achieving the goal of common prosperity.By selecting panel data from 254 prefecture-level and above cities in China for the period 2011-2021 as samples,an indicator system was constructed based on the connotative characteristics of common prosperity and the digital economy. The benchmark regression model and intermediary effect model were used to examine the impact effects and mechanisms of the digital economy on common prosperity, and the threshold effect model was further used to test the nonlinear relationship between digital economy and common prosperity. The results indicate that the digital economy has a promoting effect on common prosperity, which is particularly pronounced in the eastern region,large-scale cities, and non resource-based cities.Entrepreneurial activity, human capital, and technological innovation are identified as effective mechanisms through which the digital economy promotes common prosperity. The empowerment of common prosperity by the digital economy exhibits a non-linear characteristic with increasing marginal effects. Therefore,it is recommended to continuously improve digital infrastructure, promote digital transformation of industries;formulate regional development strategies to tap into digital potential;and actively leverage the role of the government to assist in advancing common prosperity.
