Effects of Pollen and Nectar Sources on Biological Characteristics of Harmonia axyridis
As an important predatory insect,Harmonia axyridis often feeds on some pollen or nectar during its growth and development. In order to clear the effects of pollen and nectar sources on the biological characteris-tics of H.axyridis, four treatments including pollen+aphid, aphid, pollen and water were set up to study the number of eggs, life span, survival rate of its adult, predation rate of its larval and developmental duration. The results showed that the supplement of pollen and nectar had significant effects on the number of egg, longevity and survival rate. However, the the number of egg fed on the pollen alone was significantly lower than that of the aphid-feeding treatments, indicating that nectar could not replace aphids for the reproduction of H.axyridis.Pollen and nectar sources had no significant effect on larval development duration and predation. The pollen and nectar source has a significant impact on the adults, but has no significant effect on larvae.
