Cormac McCarthy's Western novel series,"the Border Trilogy"described the community of the Ameri-can West facing crisis under the influence of modernity that flourished in the mid-20th century. As a result of ex-traneous factors of modernity beyond the locality, the community gradually disintegrated on the levels of kinship,lo-cality,and spirituality. The cowboy youths thereby lost the sense of belonging, and embarked on a journey to re-construct the community. The pursuit of identity in modernity and the situation of"solitary"impeded their con-struction of communities, but value rationality and mutual help made it possible to build a new community among strangers. The hope of reconstructing community with humanity conveyed McCarthy's solutions of the spiritual cri-sis brought by modernity, which is modern people's loneliness.
