Epidemic Prevention and Social Significance in Amur Oblast,Russia,from the Late 19th Century to the Early 20th Century
The opening of shipping in the Amur River basin promotes the development of coastal economy,attracting a significant influx of foreign immigrants.The Amur region,due to a low level of healthcare and an underdeveloped epidemic prevention system,gets frequently plagued by disease outbreaks.This article,through studying original Russian archival and documentary sources,examines the epidemic prevention measures and their social significance in the Amur region's fighting against smallpox,cholera,and plague from the late 19th to the early 20th century.In 1910,the plague came to China from Siberia of Russia through Manchuria.In response,the Amur region,with the Amur River(Heilongjiang)acting as the border between China and Russia,made a series of emergency plans to prevent its spread.Although these century-old epidemic prevention measures were not perfect,they offer historical insights for the current joint Sino-Russian efforts in combating infectious diseases along their border.
