"鬱(Yu)"and the simplified character"郁(Yu)"are two different characters in Shuo Wen Jie Zi.Through searching the dictionaries,lexicons and rhyming dictionary of the past dynasties,and referring to research achievements,the similarities and differences of"鬱"and"郁"are investigated from the diachronic level of font development,senses of a dictionary entry and reiterative location,and then from the synchronic level,the"鬱(Yu)"and"郁(Yu)"in modern dialects are observed.It is further confirmed that"鬱(Yu)"and"郁(Yu)"in ancient times are different in pronunciation and meaning,but the senses are partially connected.Although"鬱(Yu)"is simplified as"郁(Yu)"in modern times,there are still differences between them in dialects.
