Comparing Cultural Translation of Personal Appellation in Two English Versions of Journey to the West
Journey to the West,as one of the four classic Chinese works,carries rich cultural connotations in the process of translating appellations into English.From the perspective of cultural translation,this article compares two English versions of Journey to the West—Yang Xianyi couple's version and Hawkes'version,and finds out explores the translation strategies and the transmission of cultural connotations have their own characteristics.Through comparative analysis,it was found that there are certain differences in the translation of appellations between the two versions,which reflect the differences in the translator's understanding and handling of cultural differences,which is of reference value to the practice of English translation.
