The Influence of Hongju Zen on Korean Buddhism:Introduction,Acceptance and Promotion
In mid to late eighth century,Mazu Daoyi founded Hongzhou Zen with Jiangxi as the center.Hongzhou Zen and its various factions evolved on this basis are important links in the final establishment of Southern Zen in China.In the ninth century,a large number of Korean monks entered China to pursue dharma.South Chinese Zen gradually spread to the Korean Peninsula.In late Silla period to early Goryeo period and on the Korean Peninsula,the"Nine Mountains Zen Sects"was gradually formed to promote Zen Buddhism.Seven of the nine mountains were started by the disciples of Mazu Daoyi.Hongzhou Zen,which became very popular on the Korean Peninsula,brought fresh blood to the stagnant and decadent Buddhist order on the Korean Peninsula.Hongzhou Zen contributes to the formation of Korean"Pray for Buddhism",and provides a reference model for the systematic development of Zen in the Korean Peninsula.It is the origin of Caoxi Sect in modern Korea,and cultivates a group of eminent monks with profound Zen Buddhism for the Korean Peninsula.
