Russia and Turkey Geopolitical Game over the Nagorno-Karabakh issue
The Nagorno-Karabakh region has long been a hotspot in the geopolitics of the Caucasus and even Eurasia due to territorial, historical, religious, and ethnic conflicts and wars.It is still unknown whether the demise of the Republic of Artsakh on January 1,2024 will mark the end of the territorial disputes in the Nagorno-Karabakh region. However,Türkiye's successful intervention in the Second Nagorno-Karabakh War and its return to the South Caucasus over the past century has given it an increasingly important voice in the region, providing full support for Azerbaijan's dominance of the Nagorno-Karabakh issue in the hope of marginalizing Russia's influence and improving its position in the South Caucasus.Russia,on the other hand, due to its national interests and the impact of the Ukrainian crisis, has no time to pay attention to the South Caucasus region, and because it cannot realistically undermine its partnership with Türkiye. Therefore,it tacitly allows Türkiye to enter its own sphere of influence and exchange interests with it to participate in the settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh issue together. The competitive cooperation between Russia and Türkiye on Nagorno-Karabakh issue not only deeply reflects the geopolitical game between the two sides, but also,to a certain extent, affects the process of the Nagorno-Karabakh settlement.
