A Study on the Translation of Fuzzy Language in Thackeray's Satirical Novel Vanity Fair
Fuzziness is an inherent property of language,as well as an indispensable expression tool for literary works. The most common types of fuzzy language include"lexical fuzziness, semantic fuzziness, and rhetorical fuzziness".In Vanity Fair,Thackeray uses a large amount of fuzzy language to enhance its satirical effects, which also increases the difficulty of translating this literary work.By extracting some examples from Mr.Yang Bi's translation of Thackeray's satirical novel,Vanity Fair,it is found that she skillfully translates the fuzzy"words, sentences, and rhetoric"with the employment of such translation methods as"lexical extension, semantic supplement, omission, adjustment, metaphor and oxymoron",and preserve to the greatest extent the original meaning and satirical effects of the fuzzy language in the original novel.
