Chinese Students in Germany:The Role of Language Profi-ciency,Course Language and Socio-Cultural Adaptation for Social Integration
Chinese students are the second largest group after Indian students at German universities. This study addresses the crucial issue of social integration among Chinese students during their stud-ies.The data is based on the Germany-wide longitudinal study, namely the International Student Sur-vey,including both quantitative and qualitative evaluations for the first and fourth semesters. The re-sults clearly show that Chinese students are less socially integrated than other Asian students,espe-cially in German-language degree courses.Other significant influencing factors are the course-related language skills and socio-cultural adaptation. This English study program promotes social integration more strongly than German-language programs. The study recommends targeted support measures to intercultural exchange throughout the entire course of study so as to promote the social integration and academic success of Chinese students in Germany.
