Smart city construction is seen as a new governance model for solving various urban problems due to rapid urbanization,however,are urban systems becoming more sustainable as a result of smart city construction?This is a question that remains to be answered.Based on the panel data of 272 prefecture-level cities in China from 2005 to 2021,this article analyzes the effect of smart city construction on sustainable urban devel-opment by using multi-time point difference-in-differences and synthetic difference-in-differences methods.It is found that smart city construction promotes sustainable urban development,and a series of robustness tests and instrumental variable estimation corroborate the robustness of the research findings,but the policy effects vary across different locations,types and characteristics of cities.Mecha-nism analysis shows that promoting green technology innovation,promoting industrial structure transfor-mation and upgrading and improving resource alloca-tion efficiency are effective paths for smart city con-struction to promote sustainable urban development.Further analysis reveals that the government's envi-ronmental attention and fiscal pressure play positive and negative moderating roles,respectively,in the process of smart city construction affecting urban sustainable development.This article clarifies the logical relationship between smart city construction and sustainable urban development and provides valuable empirical evidence and policy references.
