As a key component of China's social management system,an important trend in the reform process of the household registration sys-tem has been the gradual liberalization of household registration controls. This direction of reform not only reflects respect for the individual's right to free movement but is also an important manifestation of the promotion of social equity and progress. At the same time, the coordinated development of regional economies,as an inevitable trend of historical devel-opment,is intrinsically and logically linked to the deregulation of household registration. This article explores in depth the impact of household registration deregulation on the coordinated development of China's regional economy and its mechanism of ac-tion,with a view to providing theoretical support and practical reference for deepening the reform of the household registration system and promoting the coordinated development of the regional economy. The study finds that:(1)Household registration deregulation can narrow the development gap while enhancing the level of regional economic develop-ment,which is conducive to the realization of coor-dinated regional economic development.(2)The results of heterogeneity analysis show that the effect is more significant in the eastern and central regions and in 2006 and beyond.(3)As far as the mecha-nism is concerned, the deregulation of household registration promotes the coordinated development of regional economy by optimizing the efficiency of factor allocation, improving industrial structure and improving employment. Therefore,it is necessary to further advance the reform of the household registra-tion system, accelerate the construction of a unified national market, enhance the flexibility of the labor market, and achieve coordinated regional economic development.
