Manufacturing Export Servitization and the Increasing Employment and the Improvement of Employment Quality of Service Sectors
As the deep integration of manufacturing and services is an important pathway for China's high-quality economic development, its impact on employment requires careful evaluation. This paper comprehensively utilizes and matches data from 236 Chinese prefecture-level cities, the Economic Census of China, the Population Census, the Customs Import and Export Enterprise Database, and other large-scale databases. And input-output techniques are applied to calculate the degree of servitization in manufacturing export products. The findings indicate that for every additional $ 1,000 of service input in manufacturing production per labor unit, the urban service industry employment rate will increase by approximately 0.455%.This employment-boosting effect is constrained by the elasticity of urban labor supply and the skill levels of urban labors.Further analysis shows that the servitization of manufacturing export products enhances overall urban employment quality from multiple dimensions, including the employment environment and employment conditions, and drives high-quality employment in advanced service sectors. This paper provides empirical support for the integration of the secondary and tertiary industries to facilitate China's high-quality economic development, and offers policy recommendations for further improving labor factor market reforms and enhancing the role of the service sector as an"employment stabilizer."
