Exploring the Fund-raising Problem of the Bell and Drum Tower of Doumu Palace in Mount Taishan
There are many doubts about the timing and motivation of the fund-raising for the Bell and Drum Tower of Doumu Palace in Mount Taishan, and it can be inferred from the correction of the inscription of the"Record of the Creation and the Repair of the Bell and Drum Tower of Doumu Palace"and the reading of the relevant documents that the same inscriptions were not actually from the same batch but from different requests. It can be inferred from the context of the time that three groups of people participated in the creation of the Bell and Drum Tower of Doumu Palace from the 52nd year to around the 53rd year of the Qianlong era:the first group was the governor of the canal Yu Qi who prayed for rain, together with the military officers of the guard and the former governor of Zhejiang Sun Kuo who prayed for a secure career;the second group was the Yanzhou general officer,Ke Fan who prayed for rain and for his own success in the capital;and the third group was the ordinary donators. At that time, the Qianlong emperor forbade the destruction of the stele commemorating the merit of officials, and the local officials wanted to accumulate merit and blessings but did not want to attract the attention of their superiors,so they expressed themselves in a subtle way to avoid trouble and protect themselves.
