Village Collectives Transformation in the Urban Renewal of China
Based on six years of fieldwork conducted in a community of villages in City T,this paper explores the transformation of a village collective from being alienated families to becoming a cooperative that shares resources among villagers. This transformation occurs within the context of urban renewal and land conversion, where the village collective faces economic development limitations. The findings suggest that the village collective has adapted by assuming new forms,as its members are not inclined to fully integrate into the city's regular market.Simultaneously, the process of land conversion remains incomplete,as the village collective can still exercise control over new properties following the city's renewal. Therefore, this paper argues that urbanization for the local population is a segmented-diversity process. The sustainability of the village collective is reliant on complex family networks and further strengthened through the distribution of collective benefits.
