The Historical Narration and Realistic Expression of the Literature Among the Lang Soldiers and Lang People in Cenxi,Guangxi
During the late Ming to Qing periods, the Lang soldiers and Lang people in the Cenxi region of Guangxi completed a transformation of identity from Lang-Tong individuals to Han Chinese, making it a classic case for studying the formation of the Chinese national community in South China since the Ming and Qing dynasties. As a culturally marginalized group, the narratives found in the folk literature of the Lang soldiers and Lang people played a crucial role in this process.Firstly, the narratives of their heroic ancestors were appropriately embedded in local public knowledge, thereby enhancing the authority of their ancestral history.Secondly, the narratives highlighting the preferential system of the Lang soldiers and Lang people emphasized the legitimacy and legality of their merits, land grants, and farming obligations.Lastly, the narratives of their ancestral origins in the Central Plains connected them to regions such as Hunan,Guangdong,Guangxi and other areas in the south of Yangtze River, which had a more mature Huaxia civilization, reflecting the legitimacy of their cultural identity. These historical narratives in folk literature demonstrate the Lang soldiers and Lang people's deep-seated and conscious expression of their identification with the"unified"nation-state,Chinese culture, and the Chinese ethnic group since the Ming and Qing periods.
