Textual Research on the"Grand Funeral"in the Funeral Customs in Western Hunan
Since the reform of changing from native chieftainship to direct imperial rule during the Yongzheng era of the Qing Dynasty, the vast region of Western Hunan, while retaining its original funeral customs, gradually integrated with the Central Plains funeral culture, forming funeral customs with unique local characteristics.During the funeral period, the phrase"当大事"(regarding it as a major event)is posted on the door of the mourning family, and the coffin is placed in the center of the main hall for three to nine days. The day before the funeral is locally referred to as"大葬"(grand funeral),during which the most solemn funeral rites are held to accompany the deceased on their last journey. The term"大葬"has been prevalent in Western Hunan for a long time, but its meaning is somewhat difficult to comprehend.By utilizing folk scripture manuscripts, historical texts, and combining local dialect pronunciations to investigate and explore,it was discovered that"大葬"is actually a misinterpretation of"大赞"(great praise).
