Fragile Rule:Changes in Order in the Rear Areas Under the Rule of the Kuomintang in the Late Period of the Liberation War in China——Based on the Investigation of the "Xiangxi Incident" in 1949
Xiangxi(Western Hunan)was a key route for the People's Liberation Army to advance southwest in the later period of the Liberation War.The outbreak of the"Xiangxi Incident"in March 1949 was not only influenced by the complex ethnic issues, backward economy, and remote geography of the local area in the past, but also by the people's aversion to the Kuomintang(the Chinese Nationalist Party)launching a civil war and absorbing a large amount of war resources, the struggle between the Kuomintang and the Communist Party, and the pursuit of personal interests by Wang Yuanhua,Cao Zhenya, and others,as well as Li Mo'an's collection of civilian guns and cultivation of personal power in Xiangxi. The"Xiangxi Incident"reflected the weakening of the central authority of the Kuomintang at that time,as well as the increasing decentralization of the ruling power in the rear areas of the Kuomintang's rule by local forces. This is a sign of the complete collapse of order in the Kuomintang-controlled areas.
