On Regulations of Limiting Tributary People in the Tang Dynasty
Now and then foreign countries paid tributary people,which mainly include singing and dancing artists,people related to religion,people with special skills and slaves to the Tang Dynasty.From the first emperor Gaozu,to Yizong in the late Tang Dynasty,many emperors issued decrees limiting tributary population.Regulations of limiting tribute people in the Tang Dynasty took imperial decrees as the main form,represented and maintained the will and interests of the supreme ruler but lacked appropriate sanctions.In different periods of the Tang Dynasty,enforcement of the ban was not satisfactory.Emperors such as Taizong,Xuanzong,Daizong,Dezong and Muzong accepted tributary population from foreign countries.The reasons for the implementation difficulties of regulations to limit tributary people in the Tang Dynasty mainly included the emperor's attitude(thrift or compassion),foreign countries in violation of the regulations had not been punished and it was difficult to inform all the foreign countries of the regulations.
