Small signal measurement and analysis of core permeability based on equivalent impedance
Existing equipment for testing the magnetic properties of soft magnetic materials is de-signed for strip and ring shape specimens. The test platforms are constructed when measuring the magnetic properties of the cores of large volume transformers or inductors. The core permeability is then measured using the time domain method. The excitation inductance is measured using a small-signal measurement by the LCR meter to assess the transformer core permeability more conveniently than using the time domain method.Based on the equivalent circuit in the test loops, the principle of measuring the permeability and magnetization curves of the operating points in open-circuit voltage mode, constant voltage mode and constant current mode of LCR meter were compared and analyzed. The test scope of a small-signal LCR meter for core permeability testing was summarized.Magnetic permeability in amorphous iron before and after painting was compared and tested by a small-signal measurement. The results of the study show that the small-singnal LCR meter measurement method is simpler and more convenient than the time domain method, and is suitable for core consistency testing of bulk transformers or reactors.
