Microplastics Pollution in Composting Systems and the Mitigation Strategies
Due to the increasing production and recalcitrance,the waste of plastics is going to be a new environmental prob-lem.When large plastic wastes enter the environment,they would be broken into microplastics under the function of mechani-cal forces,illumination and/or organism.Presently,microplastics have been found in various environments including the product of compost.Microplastics in the feedstock of compost cannot be completely removed during the traditional compost-ing treatment,which brings potential risks to the land use of composting products.In this paper,the sources of microplastics of compost,the effects of microplastics on compost fermentation,the fate of microplastics during the treatment of composting and the strategies for removing microplastics from composting process had been reviewed.Finally,the future research direc-tions about the removing of microplastics from compost system were envisioned.
