Evaluation of Aquatic Eco-health in the Middle and Lower Reaches of Xiuhe River Basin Based on the P-IBI Index
Xiuhe River, one of the five major tributaries of Poyang Lake, plays a crucial role in understanding the current states of aquatic ecology in the region.Based on survey data of phytoplankton communities and physicochemical parame-ters collected at 14 sampling points during the high-flow period(August)and low-flow period(December)of 2021,a Phytoplankton Index of Biological Integrity(P-IBI)assessment system was developed to comprehensively evaluate the aquatic ecological health in the middle and lower reaches of Xiuhe River. The survey revealed a total of 66 species of phytoplankton belonging to 44 genera and 6 phyla, with 17 and 5 dominant species were found during the abundant and dry periods.Six core assessment indicators, including the percentage of diatom genera, percentage of diatom cell density, percentage of green algae cell density,Shannon-Wiener index, green algae cell biomass, and percentage of diatom cell biomass, were selected through distribution range tests, discriminant analysis, and redundancy analysis. These indicators were then standardized using a ratio method, and four health assessment levels were established. Results showed that the overall aquatic ecological health in the middle and lower reaches of the Xiuhe River was in"sub-healthy".Specifically,the proportions of sites falling into the"healthy","sub-healthy","fair",and"poor"were 28.57%,21.43%,21.43%,and 28.57%,respectively.Redundancy analysis further revealed that the key environmental drivers of aquatic ecological health in the River were transparency, water temperature and dissolved oxygen. This study provides valuable reference and scientific evidence for the management and ecological restoration of aquatic ecosystems in the sub-basins of Poyang Lake.
