Research Progress on the Effects of New Pollutants on Gut Microbiota and the Associated Toxicity
The toxic effects caused by the interaction between new pollutants and gut microbiota are gradually recognized and concerned. This paper reviews the effects of the particularly concerned new pollutants, including endocrine disrupting chemicals,per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances, microplastics and antibiotics,on gut microbiota and the related toxicities. The limitations of the current studies are also proposed. It is suggested that fecal microbiota transplantation experiments using germ-free animal models should be carried out to clarify the causal relationship between gut microbiota and host health. In addition,multi-omics analysis is expected to systematically reveal the mechanism of new pollutants-induced toxic effects by dysregulating gut microbiota. Finally, the long-term effects, age susceptibility and gender specificity of health effects caused by new pollutants also deserve further investigation from the perspective of gut microbiota dysbiosis.
