The existence of old Uyghur Nestorians and other related peoples, who spoke old Turkic languages, has been confirmed by the discovery of Christian manuscripts in historical lan-guages from the Western Regions,Syriac gravestones with crosses and Nestorian sites in a vast area stretching from Semirech'e in the west to Quanzhou in Fujian Province in the east. The Syriac,Sogdian and old Uyghur manuscripts unearthed in Turpan have been systematically edited and inter-preted by a joint group of experts from Britain and Germany. Also,a great deal of work has been done by Chinese scholars to interpret and collate the gravestones of Nestorians found in Central A-sia,parts of Xinjiang and Inner Mongolia,Quanzhou and Yangzhou. In the last thirty years or so,the subject of the Church of the East(Nestorianism)has once again been the topic of intense de-bate by scholars both at home and abroad, and the study of the old Uyghur Nestorians has also been extensively covered. The recent archaeological re-excavation of Xipang Nestorian site and the new discovery of Nestorian monastery at Tangchaodun in Xinjiang provide more research opportunities and possibilities for the study on Old Uyghur Nestorianism. However,in comparison with the studies on Chinese literature-based Nestorianism, there is still much to be considered and ad-vanced in terms of the depth and breadth of documentary research and the study on the history of the spread of Nestorianism related to old Uyghur people.
