In 1687,several Joseon castaways, including Kim Taehwang, drifted to Annan and were brought back to their homeland by the merchants from the Qing Dynasty by sea.Later on,the Joseon government returned Chinese merchants by land, and the Qing court took this op-portunity to clarify the specific response measures for Joseon to deal with Qing ships accidentally landing there. This paper argues that the reason why the merchants from Qing were willing to re-turn Joseon castaways was not only for humanitarianism but also for profit. Also, this paper con-tends that Joseon decided to return the merchants to Qing by land due to the Qing haijin or sea ban policy and its relations with Qing. The behaviour prompted Qing court to send an official com-munication to Joseon with the hope that the trade ships from Qing could be treated kindly by Jo-seon.This indirectly clarified how Joseon dealt with Chinese castaways.
