There is a scarcity of historical records regarding shipbuilding techniques in ancient China. After conducting an extensive search through historical documents, the author found that large-scale shipbuilding began to utilize Chuanyang, literally"ship samples",during the construction process around the Southern Song Dynasty. It is speculated that these"ship sam-ples"were a type of ship construction drawing. The recorded shipbuilding techniques of the Ming Dynasty,as evidenced by the two linear structural diagrams of ships preserved in Shen Jiangcun's Nanchuan Ji,may have been derived from the Song Dynasty"ship samples".Xu Lu,who re-constructed a traditional sailing ship based on ancient shipbuilding techniques, wrote a documen-tary book Zaozhou Ji or The Chinese Ancient Naval Architecture:Princess Taiping and Her Junk-men,to record his experiences and knowledge about shipbuilding. This represents a new record of traditional techniques and is highly recommended for reading.
