Carbon emission reduction benefits of dry waste recycling treatment in Shanghai
Almost all dry waste has been incinerated since the classified collection of municipal domestic waste in Shanghai from 2019.Recycling plastic, paper, glass and metal components from dry waste to produce corresponding resource-based products could save resources and reduce CO2 emissions of waste incineration. In order to study the CO2 reduction benefits of recycling of dry waste, the physico-chemical properties of dry waste in 2021 in Shanghai were measured. The CO2 emissions from incineration of all dry waste were calculated. And so were the CO2 emissions when the rest dry waste was incinerated after plastic, paper, glass and metal components were recycled. Results showed that the CO2 annua emissions when the rest dry waste was incinerated after plastic, paper, glass and metal components were recycled could be reduced by 81.09%compared with that from incineration of all dry waste.Plastic was the most important source of CO2 emissions when taking all dry waste incineration, which accounted for 98.54%CO2 annual emissions of dry waste with mineral carbon. So plastic was determinable to reduce dry waste incineration CO2 emissions.
