A denitrifier named D3 was isolated from a moving bed biofilm reactor treating municipal wastewater.Phylogeneticaffiliation and denitrification characteristicsof the strain were further studied.16S rDNA sequence was analyzed to identify the strain.Effects of substrate concentration,pH and temperature on the denitrification activity of the strain were studied.Strain D3 was identified as Stenotrophomonas sp.through morphological feature,biochemical/biophysical characteristics and 16S rDNA sequence analysis.Strain D3 was able to use either sodium nitrate or sodium nitrite as electron acceptor to oxidize organic matter. The optimal electron acceptor was nitrate, the maximum denitrification rate was 19.86 mg/(L · h).The optimal pH and temperature for D3 were 7.36 and 33.5℃.Under the optimal conditions (NO-3-N 140 mg/L,acetate served as sole organic carbon source,pH 7.36 and 33.5℃),strain D3 in the exponential phase was obtained after 10 h,and the doubling time was 9.9 h.The nitrate removal efficiency was up to 95% in 48 hours.
