Monitoring and analysis of total alpha and total beta levels in drinking water around Haiyang nuclear power plant in Shandong province from 2019 to 2022
Objective To understand the background level of the radioactivity in drinking water around Haiyang nuclear power plant. Methods The monitoring of gross α and gross β radioactivity levels in drinking water was conducted during dry(from March to May)and rain periods(from July to September)within 30km of Haiyang nuclear power plant, the water samples were collected including the finished water, the terminal water, the source water and the well water, and were measured by using the low α and β measuring instrument. Results A total of 128 water samples were determined, collected from 16 sampling sites during 2019-2022.The gross α and gross β radioactivity levels were(0.035±0.023)Bq/L and(0.192±0.092)Bq/L respectively. The gross α and gross β radioactivity levels in the dry period were(0.033±0.019)Bq/L and(0.185±0.083)Bq/L,and the gross αand gross β radioactivity levels in the wet period were(0.037±0.026)Bq/L and(0.201±0.101)Bq/L respectively. There were statistically significant differences in gross α radioactivity levels between the well water and the terminal water during the dry season(Z=1.583,P<0.05).There were statistically significant differences in gross α and gross β radioactivity levels of the well water in different years(P<0.05),and significant differences were seen in gross β radioactivity levels of the terminal water in different years(P<0.05).No significant differences were seen in gross α and gross β radioactivity levels at different distances from the nuclear power plant(P>0.05).Conclusion The radioactivity level of gross α and gross β in drinking water around Haiyang nuclear power plant from 2019 to 2022 is in normal background range. The operation of Haiyang nuclear power plant has no impact on radioactivity level in drinking water around it.
