Clinical application of Pediatric Brain Tumor Family Handbook in the pediatric patients with brain tumor after surgery
Objective To investigate the effects of the Pediatric Brain Tumor Family Handbook applied in pediatric patients with brain tumors after surgery on neurological recovery, life quality and impact of related knowledge mastery by their parents. Methods A total of 110 pediatric patients who underwent intracranial tumor resection in Xinhua Hospital Affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine were randomly divided into observation group and control group, each consisting of 55 cases.Ten patients lost contact after surgery, with the loss of follow-up rate of 9.1%and finally 53 patients were included in the study group and 47 patients were designated as the control group. The control group was only treated with routine healthcare education, while the observation group was given the Pediatric Brain Tumor Family Handbook and instructed in reading and interpretation on the basis of the control group. The Wee-functional independence inventory for children(Wee-FIM)and the Gesell developmental diagnostic scale(Gesell)were used at admission and 1 month after discharge for assessment.Surveys were also performed on the mastery of knowledge concerning the disease and satisfaction rate of the parents. At admission and 6 months after discharge, the Chinese version of Pediatric Quality of Life InventoryTM(Peds QLTM 4.0)was used for assessment. Results No significant differences could be seen in the scores of Wee-FIM or Gesell at admission, when comparisons were made between the two groups(P>0.05).However,1 month after discharge, the above scores of the observation group were superior to both of the control group, with statistical significance(P<0.05).Statistical significance could neither be found in Pesd QL scores at admission, when comparisons were made between the observation group and the control group(P>0.05).However,6 month after discharge, the scores of Peds QL in the observation group were all higher than those in the control group, with statistical significance(P<0.05).After the intervention, the rate of cognition of the parents concerning the disease in the observation group was 98.0%,which was obviously superior to that of the control group(76.5%),with statistically significance(P<0.05).The rate of satisfaction concerning nursing in the observation group was 100%,which was significantly higher than that of the control group(83.0%),also with statistical significance(P<0.05).The compliance of rehabilitation guidance measures in the parents of the observation group was superior to that of the control group, also with statistical significance(P<0.05).Conclusion The educational interventions under the guidance of the Pediatric Brain Tumor Family Handbook has achieved good clinical effects, not only improving the neurological function and survival quality of the pediatric patients after surgery, but also enhancing parents'cognition of the disease and improving the compliance of rehabilitation treatment measures and satisfaction rate of nursing.
