Mediating role of narrative competence between empathy and humanistic care quality in clinical nurses
Objective To explore the mediating effect of narrative competence between empathy and humanistic care quality in clinical nurses.Methods A total of 1 050 nurses from 10 tertiary-level A general hospitals were selected by multi-stage stratified random sampling.The general information questionnaire,Jefferson Scale of Empathy,Narrative Competence Scale,Nursing Caring Characters Assessment Tool were used to conduct a questionnaire survey.Results The scores of clinical nurses'empathy,narrative competence,and humanistic care qual-ity were(92.63±16.42),(148.09±23.66),and(127.34±17.09),respectively.Clinical nurses'empathy was positively correlated with narra-tive competence and the humanistic care quality(r1=0.340,r2=0.243,r3=0.409,P<0.01).Narrative competence played a partial mediating effect between clinical nurses'empathy and humanistic care quality,with an effect value of 0.374,accounting for 54.68%of the total effect.Conclusion The quality of clinical nurses'humanistic care quality is at an upper-middle level,and narrative competence plays a partial me-diating effect between clinical nurses'empathy and humanistic care quality.It is recommended that nursing managers improve the narrative competence of clinical nurses through relevant measures,thereby improving their humanistic care quality.
