Accurate Identification of Nymphs and Female Adults of Pantala flavescens(Fabricius)
Pantala flavescens(Fabricius)is a species of dragonfly that is distributed worldwide and has a migratory behavior. It is difficult to identify Pantala flavescens(Fabricius)because of the lack of detailed morphologic maps of nymphs and morphological descriptions of female adults. We raised nymphs collected in the field to adults in the laboratory.Based on the systematic description of the morphological characteristics of nymphs and female adults,we found the body color, the length of the upper lip, forehead, antennae, anterior chin, abdomen, the shape of the posterior head, the end of the lip and tongue, the shape and number of the color spots of the anterior sternum, the abdomen 4~9,the leg and the tibia, the narrow dark area of the middle and posterior sternum, and the color of the veins in the wing buds. The characteristics of the posterior spines of the middle of the midplane of the 2nd to 4th ventral segment, the lateral spines of the 8 th and 9th ventral segment, the length of the appendages of the 10 th ventral segment, and the color of the tarsus can be used for the accurate identification of Pantala flavescens(Fabricius).Body size, compound eye, base size of hind wing, body color, wing color and wing spot color, location of wing knot, number and integrity of transverse veins before nodule, location of arch vein, color and shape of wing nevus, length and internal transverse veins of triangular chamber, shape of R3,IR3,R4 and MA pulse, number of wing chambers in disk area, shape and composition of posterior hip circle, abdomen shape, stripes, the color and length of the anal appendages can be used for the accurate identification of female adult Pantala flavescens(Fabricius),and all the characteristics are labeled in the morphologic maps of nymphs and female adults. The results of this study are helpful for the accurate identification of nymphs and female adults of yellow dragonfly, and lay a foundation for the effective control and utilization of Pantala flavescens(Fabricius).
