The Staging of Eastern History Centered on China and the Issue of"Modern":Theoretical Exploration and Value of Japanese Orien-tal Historiography
At the end of the 19th century,Japan's Naka Michiyo first wrote the general history of China with the western style his-torical periodization method of"Ancient/Middle Ages/Modern",and then Naito Konan presented the theory of"Modern of Song Dynasty"and discussed it.Later,Miyazaki Ichisada inherited and developed it,and compared the"Modern"with the Re-naissance period in western history. Thus, the pattern of oriental history centered on China, also known as"Oriental Histo-ry",was formed. In this process, the connotation of"Modern"is gradually determined and confirmed."Modern"is not only the era after the"Middle Ages",but also the era of"Pre-modern",which is a new era of transformation."Modern"is not only a term of eastern history, but also a unique term for judging the nature of social history. The theory of"Modern"and the staging method of"Ancient/Middle Ages/Modern"break the previous pattern of history writing based on the succession of dynasties, incorporate the history of the"Oriental History"into the world history system, and overturn the westerners'stereotype that"the history of the East is only the history of the succession of dynasties",which has strong historical theoretical value. It not only had a profound impact on Japanese Oriental studies and Oriental historiography, but also had a huge impact on Chinese history in the last 100 years of the 20th century.
