The noun-quantifier compounds is a relatively special type of compound word in the Chinese vocabulary system. There have been significant disagreements in the academic community regarding the nature, scope, internal structure, and identifica-tion criteria of this type of compound word. There is also controversy over whether shouji(首级)is a noun-quantifier com-pounds.After research on the development and evolution of the meaning and part of speech of ji(级)in the history of Chinese language, the virtualization level of quantifiers, the characteristics of quantifier ji(级),and the semantic and syntactic charac-teristics of shouji(首级),finds that shouji(首级)is a compound word in the form of noun-noun,rather than a compound word in the form of noun-quantifier,and then makes corrections to the academic standards for identifying compound words in the form of noun-quantifier.The noun-quantifier compounds should meet three conditions:syntactic form, semantics, and syn-tactic function. It is not enough to assume that shouji(首级)is a noun-quantifier compounds simply because ji(级)can be used as a quantifier.
