From"Having"to"Being"——A Study of Humanism in John Fowles'Novels
The main theme of John Fowles'novels is to criticize the money-and-amusement-mad Western world,to reflect on the al-ienation and distortion of human caused by capitalist industrial rationality and to explore the possible solutions.Fowles believes that"having"rather than"being"controls our era,and those who attach importance to"having"and"being"have different character structure, ways of thinking, emotional experience and value orientation.Although some of the characters in the no-vels The Collector and The French Lieutenant's Woman have different orientation toward self, others and the world, the two novels make the alternative between having and being a central issue, and look to the protagonists'struggle and choice between the two modes. The characters'transformation of existence mode does not happen overnight.Even at the end of the novels, they do not reach an absolute being mode of existence, but it shows their tendencies towards the latter—giving up selfishness, narcissism and false fantasy of life and devoting themselves to positive experience of life.
