Intergenerational Caregiving in Rural Families and Subjective Well-Being of Elderly
The impact of intergenerational caregiving on the well-being of rural elderly was explored using data from the 2021 China Health and Aging Tracking Survey Reconciliation(Harmonized CHARLS)and the 2018 CHARLS.The study found that, first, intergenerational caregiving can enhance the well-being of rural elderly.Three different dimensions of intergenerational caregiving, namely intensity of intergener-ational caregiving, experience of caring for grandchildren, and fostering style, have different effects on the well-being of rural elderly,in which caring for grandchildren, whether or not they live with their chil-dren or grandchildren, enhances the subjective well-being of rural elderly.Second, intergenerational care enhances the well-being of rural elderly through family structure,Social networking and individual struc-ture.Third,the effect of intergenerational caregiving on the well-being is heterogeneous in terms of gen-der,age,marriage,and place of residence of rural older adults.Based on the above conclusions, and a-gainst the background of the relatively weak impact of the delayed retirement policy on rural older persons, this paper argues that rural elderly should be encouraged to take care of their grandchildren, and that rele-vant subsidy policies should be introduced in order to enhance their sense of well-being,to positively cope with and solve the problem of population aging, and to promote the development of a healthy China.
