The Asymmetric Relationship between Teaching and Learning
The relationship between teaching and learning,as one of the most basic relationships in education,is an asymmetric relationship in a sense.The theories including binary antagonism,mutualism,unity,and dialectics about the relationship between teaching and learning place them within the symmetry relationship between subject and object,including causality and closure,relation-ship requiring negative dialectical criticism.In the history of Chinese education,the pendulum of meaning swings between"teaching"and"learning",resulting in an imbalance development.In the history of western education,teaching and learning have been constantly self-negating,and their relationship has developed in uncertainty.From the perspective of"teaching process as teaching events",there are event characteristics including interruptions,pauses,and sustenance in the teaching-learning relationship.From the perspective of the elucidation and freedom of learning,the relationship between teaching and learning has adventurous and unique characteristics,in-cluding inspiration,transcendence,and responsibility.Above all,the modern teaching-learning relationship must adhere to the basic principles of equality between subjects,intellectual equality,and discourse democracy,and accept the call of Others in communication and interaction,conducting difficult explorations,experiments,and risks.
